MOORREESBURG

During the middle of the 19th century, farmers in the area endeavoured to establish an outside North Church of the Zwartland Malmesbury congregation. Gentlemen F Warnich and Dirk Kotze, then owners of the farm Hooikraal, each relinquished a piece of their land for church purposes. Over a period of many years the Moorreesburg Dutch Reformed Church laid the town and purchased land to the value of thousands of pounds.

During 1905 Jan Hoffman laid out the town area called Hooikraal. Initially there were 1 234 erfs which were offered at much lower rates than the town erfs of Moorreesburg. In 1915 the town management of Hooikraal incorporated a section of land between Hooikraal and Moorreesburg.
