Whales
Yzerfontein used to be a whaling station, so it's no surprise that the bay is a favoured destination for whales (Southern Right and Humpbacked whales) in the spring (August till November is whale watching season, although these great creatures are seen as as late as December). These gentle giants of the ocean come into the bay to calve. There are a number of vantage points from which visitors can watch the whales play in the sea.
The most common whale spotted is the Southern Right Whale, so called because it was said to be the "right" one to catch (in the messy days of whale hunting).
