West Coast National Park

West Coast National Park official site

The park is located on the shore of the Langebaan Lagoon (about 100km north of Cape Town), and is known for its prolific birdlife and Spring flora. The park stretches from the north of Yzerfontein to Saldanah Bay. It includes the Potsberg nature reserve, Langebaan Lagoon and the islands Jutten, Malgas, Marcus and Schaapen. The Park is home to more than 250 bird species. Annually, about 70 000 birds from Siberia and northern Russia travel south to breed in the West Coast National Park.

Accommodation

New accommodation for tourists was opened by deputy environment minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi in the West Coast National Park on 3rd April 2006. Mabudafhasi said the project would serve as a model of how a local community could work with a national park, and benefit from the relationship in a sustainable way.

The eight chalets were formerly workers' cottages and had fallen into disrepair - they have now been renovated at a cost of R1.3-million (financed by the department of environmental affairs).

The chalets are located at Duinebos, within the park's boundaries. The next step in the project is to include four more chalets and a conference centre.

Between six and 10 percent of the rentals of the chalets would go to the West Coast National Park, as it had made the land available for the project.

The chalets "sleep four comfortably, but will fit six" and are available for R450 a night (5 April 2006).
